Watch Straps Size Guide

Custom Watch Straps

When ordering a custom strap, getting the size right is more than a technical detail. It’s the key to comfort, balance, and style. In this watch straps size guide, I’ll walk you through the key measurements and help you choose the ideal configuration for your watch and wrist.

1. How to Measure Your Wrist

Start by measuring your wrist with a flexible measuring tape, just below the wrist bone. If you don’t have one, a strip of paper and a ruler will do the job. This measurement, in centimeters, will help determine the right strap length.

Strap Size Length (mm) Wrist Size (approx.)
XS 105 / 65 13.5 – 15.0 cm
S 110 / 70 15.0 – 16.0 cm
M 115 / 75 16.0 – 17.5 cm
L 120 / 80 17.5 – 19.0 cm
XL 125 / 85 19.0 – 20.5 cm
XXL 130 / 90 20.5 – 22.0 cm

2. Lug Width & Buckle Width

The lug width is the distance between the lugs of your watch case where the strap is attached. It’s measured in millimeters (e.g. 18mm, 20mm, 22mm). You can check your watch’s specs or measure it with a caliper.

The buckle width refers to the width of the strap at the buckle end. Some straps maintain the same width, while others taper for a sleeker look; for example, 20/16mm.

3. Choosing the Right Strap Length

Strap length is divided into two parts: the long side (with holes) and the short side (with the buckle). A typical size might be 115/75 mm. The total length and proportion affect the fit and where the buckle sits on your wrist.

For a balanced look, the buckle should sit centered under your wrist. If you’re between sizes, I recommend going slightly longer for comfort.

4. Padding Style

The padding style affects both the thickness and the profile of the strap:

  • Slim – sleek and understated, perfect for dress watches

  • Medium – a classic, balanced feel for everyday wear

  • Thick – structured and bold, ideal for tool or sports watches

You can also request a custom padding height if you’re after a specific feel or aesthetic.

5. Strap End Options

The strap end plays a role in both design and fit:

  • Curved End – follows the curve of the watch case

  • Straight End – clean and classic, compatible with most watches

  • Apple Watch Lugs – custom-made for Apple Watches
